Through the Looking Glass…and What I Found There

There she was glaring back at me, the unhappy, discontented, and joyless soul of myself. I felt overwhelmed. I had no idea where or how to begin. I’m sure you can relate.

The things that I saw weren’t all bad so I decided to work with the positive things and strategies that had worked for me in the past. My organizational skills, my industrial engineering background and determination would serve me well. After all, those things had always helped me optimize situations and problem solve in the past in both my professional and personal life, why not now? Sure, the problem in front of me was not some manufacturing process or volunteer issue that needed to be resolved but it was a complex system nonetheless that needed optimization.

It is easy to overrate the power of the obstacles, challenges, or life circumstances that we face in life. As women, we underrate (often dismiss or ignore) the power we have in ourselves. We all have assests that we can use to our advantage.

Work on becoming more self-aware; evaluate yourself in a constructive way.

Why are you behaving a certain way?

Why are you reacting a certain way?

Who are you in this moment?

Really assess yourself, as painful as it turns out to be, it’s worth it in the long run.

Give yourself credit for the gifts you've been given and for your accomplishments to date, no matter how insignificant you may think they are; they have served you and can again.

Stop trying to live up to ridiculous standards.
Stop being so hard on yourself.

Realize that nobody is perfect and can’t be.

Forgive others and forgive yourself.

Don’t let your past determine your future.

Be open-minded about strategies that you may try to help move yourself forward.  Be willing to try "it on for size.”

Expand the awareness of your best and worst qualities.

Correct what you don’t like.

Make plans to do more and be more like the person you want to be.

Understand that self-mastery and moving toward your authentic self is an ongoing process and you'll need to commit to it.

It’s not going to happen overnight, but it will happen.

Be eager to embrace change as it happens.

You are worthy for greatness!
